Call for consultancy: Strengthening investigative journalism for an online media house

Background

Are you passionate about transforming the media landscape in Rwanda?

The Rwanda Media Programme (RMP) 2021-2026 is a media initiative aimed at fostering a professional, vibrant, and financially sustainable media sector. RMP aims to strengthen journalism standards, truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness, and public accountability while promoting gender inclusivity and diversity.

With the support of Fojo Media Institute, and The Swedish and Swiss embassies in Kigali, we are now running the Phase 2 of the Rwanda Media Viability Program. This phase focuses on equipping selected media houses with tailored support to enhance financial sustainability and drive long-term growth through innovative projects.

Investigative Journalism

Consultant profiles & areas of expertise

  • Expertise to train journalists in different techniques to do investigative journalism and long form storytelling
  • Facilitating an editorial planning system divided into thematic subject areas and testing ideas with focus groups of potential subscribers
  • Inspiration and training for how to present investigative stories in a variety of formats (Readable text and cutups, infographics, infoboxes, video, audio, debate and q&a for subscribers etc)

Who should apply?

Consultants interested in this opportunity should meet the following criteria

  • Investigative journalism training: Proven expertise in training journalists in investigative reporting and long-form storytelling techniques.
  • Editorial planning: Experience in facilitating editorial systems and testing story ideas with potential subscribers to increase engagement.
  • Multimedia presentation skills: Ability to train on presenting investigative stories in various formats, including text, video, audio, and infographics.
  • Industry experience: 5+ years in media organizations with a focus on investigative journalism and content strategy.
  • Regional & international expertise: Understanding of global and local trends in investigative journalism, adaptable to different contexts.
  • Audience engagement: Skills in growing and retaining an audience through investigative content and targeted marketing.

  • Cover letter: Brief introduction and motivation for applying
  • Profile: Overview of relevant experience and qualifications
  • Expertise statement: Clear indication of specialization and relevance to specific media house needs
  • Proposals must be submitted by 03rd March 2025 not later than 23h 59 Rwandan time.
