COPEDU PLC is a microfinance institution that provides financial services such as credits and savings to its customers. COPEDU plc was registered as a Microfinance Company in Rwanda Development Board (RDB) on February 21 2013, with a certificate to perform microfinance services by the Central Bank of Rwanda (BNR) on 13th/03/2014.
On 25th/01/2019, COPEDU plc changed its name to COPEDU PLC following the provisions of Law N ° 17/2018 of 13/04/2018 governing commercial companies. This means that COPEDU PLC is a Public Limited Company that can call on the public for investments as shares.
Initially, COPEDU plc also started as COOPEDU-KIGALI because at that time it was a cooperative that was only allowed to operate within Kigali city and in the former Kigali-Ngari boundaries.

The cooperative COOPEDU-KIGALI was established by a non-profit organization called DUTERIMBERE ASBL on June 15, 1997. The cooperative was launched based on a study on savings and loan services done by DUTERIMBERE ASBL, which showed that these services could be improved by a cooperative. As a result, the non-profit organization DUTERIMBERE decided to lead in establishment of the desired cooperative, thus partnering with other partners to establish COOPEDU-KIGALI.

In 2005, it was BNR that gave COOPEDU-KIGALI a license to deposit and lend.
In 2008, COOPEDU-KIGALI revised its services, and began its day-to-day operations using technology.

In 2009, COOPEDU-KIGALI changed its name to COOPEDU based on a resolution of the General Assembly convened in October 2009.
In 2012, at its general assembly meeting of 22/12/2012, the cooperative COOPEDU changed the constitution and made it a company.
The new company was renamed COPEDU plc, initially with 12,996 shareholders who were also members of the COOPEDU cooperative, with a share capital of 790,156,800 Frw equivalent to 1,975,392 shares valued at 400 frw per share.

COPEDU PLC currently operates in the City of Kigali and the Eastern Province. Its headquarters are in KICUKIRO district.
